The Story of Parashat Noach

A righteous man in a broken world

The earth is filled with violence, and Noach alone is called righteous in his generation. He is told to build a teivah, an ark of gofer wood covered with pitch inside and out, and to bring his family and the animals aboard.

The waters

Rain falls for forty days and forty nights, and the waters rise over the mountains. The ark comes to rest on the mountains of Ararat. Noach sends out a raven and then a dove, and when the dove returns with an olive leaf, he knows the land is coming back. He builds an altar, and the bow appears in the cloud as a sign that the waters will never again destroy all flesh.

The tower and the road to Charan

People settle on the plain of Shinar and say, let us make bricks and build a tower with its top in the heavens. Their one language is confused, and they scatter across the earth. The portion closes on a family line: Terach leaves Ur Kasdim with his son Avram, and they stop at Charan.
