The Story of Parashat Chayei Sarah

A field and a cave

The portion is called the life of Sarah, and it opens with her death at Chevron. Avraham has been promised the whole land and owns none of it, so he stands before the sons of Chet and insists on paying full price, four hundred shekels of silver, for the field and cave of Machpelah.

Rivkah at the well

Avraham sends his servant to Aram Naharayim to find a wife for Yitzchak. At the well at evening, the servant asks for a sign: the one who offers water to him and to his camels too. Before he finishes praying, Rivkah comes out with her jar and draws for all ten camels. She chooses to go with him, and when she sees Yitzchak in the field, she comes down from her camel.

Old and full of days

Yitzchak brings Rivkah into his mother's tent, and he is comforted. Avraham lives to 175 and dies old and full of days. Yitzchak and Yishmael, the two sons, bury him together at Machpelah.
